Overview of In Vitro Fertilization (IVF)
In Vitro Fertilization is a complex series of procedures used to help with fertility or prevent genetic problems and assist with the conception of a child.
Step 1: Stimulation
During stimulation, a patient takes hormonal injections for 8-12 days to stimulate ovaries to produce multiple mature eggs.
Step 2: Egg Retrieval
A minor surgical procedure under light sedation where eggs are aspirated from ovarian follicles using ultrasound guidance.
Step 3: Fertilization & Embryology
Retrieved eggs are mixed with sperm (or injected via ICSI) in a controlled laboratory. Resulting embryos are monitored in incubators for 3-5 days.
Step 4: Embryo Transfer
A catheter is used to gently place one or two high-quality embryos back inside the uterus.
